YOUR correspondent Mr Prideaux (HE, Dec 3) would seem to take me to task over my letter of November 15 on political grounds. Yet Pounds 180million per annum for the defence of the Falklands is peanuts when you consider that we are paying Pounds 48million PER DAY to the EU. Our defence is definitely being done on the cheap -- ask any of our Forces personnel who have had to buy a lot of their own kit to fight firstly in Iraq and now in Afghanistan.

As regards the MOD budget of Pounds 36billion, Ark Royal is to be either scrapped or sold, two new carriers are to be built, but the Government has scrapped the Sea Harriers leaving us with no carrier planes for the foreseeable future! What good are aircraft carriers without aircraft? I stick to my guns by being nonpolitical in this matter. Your correspondent says the French helped us in the Falklands by carrying out mock attacks while our ships were enroute to the islands -- why didn't they come to help us or were they like the USA who sat back and finally did nothing! Criticism I can take no problem, but do not denigrate our service personnel and keep things non-political.
