IT'S often easier to give the people what they want.

After all, we're providing a public service, and so what should we do when someone asks for antibiotics for their sore throat or cough? When under pressure it's easy just to print out a prescription. If we refuse, the patient may be upset and come back in two or three days' time or call the out-ofhours service. This is an even larger problem in countries with private healthcare. If the patient, or their insurance company, is paying directly then if the doctor refuses antibiotics on demand, they will go to another doctor.
