AS THE coach delivered us to our accommodation, the Altair in Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria, my passing interest in all things geographical left me with a question.

How on Earth does an island with very little rainfall, and temperatures rarely falling below 20C, supply a massive tourist industry with water? Fortunately, this troubling question was answered on one of the trips during our weeklong stay.
