Summary


Wandering around the backwaters of South Devon I often come upon memorials to the sort of poverty the working class endured in Victorian times and more recent history.

The old Almshouses in Cockington, workhouses set apart from the rest of the community, were yesterday's asylums where unmarried mothers were often confined after being seduced and made pregnant by local men who weren't branded as mad. Lots of things stick in the craw and raise the hackles.
