BACK in the 1950s nonsteam activity on the main lines in the west of England was minimal, and usually confined to occasional forays by one of the Western Region's gas turbine locomotives, Brown-Boveri No.18000 or Metro-Vic No.18100.

However, after a few test runs these were normally confined to the Paddington to Bristol run, from which it was a comparatively short towingrun back to Swindon Works when they failed.
