JUST as this year, after the snows of the first two months, we suffered a fairly wet spring back in 1963, by which time our thoughts had turned to holidays -- the first of which was to be a 'package holiday' to Spain. Not your everyday 'package holiday', but a railway one, organised by the Rail Correspondence & Travel Society, on whose behalf we had pioneered a trip to Northern Spain three years earlier.

For Spain the 1960s was a decade of enormous change, not least on the railways. Until then the Spanish Railways, along with much of the rest of the country, had been marooned in the 1930s.
