NICK BYE claims to be staggered by the reaction to his proposal to build on Babbacombe Downs.

This is surprising for a man of vision. Surely he might have foreseen considerable opposition to a scheme which will obstruct the view from one end of the Downs and set a precedent for further development along the Downs. If he was so confident that his proposals would gain general approval, why hold 18 months of talk in secret? Mayor Bye seems to think that if something is repeated often enough it becomes true, hence his constant reiteration that the toilet block at Babbacombe is a 'grotty, ugly old building'. Perhaps Mr Bye would care to list those toilet blocks in Torbay which he finds more attractive and let the public decide.
