A FORMER Bay policeman -- forced to retire after a serious motorbike accident 10 years ago -- died when a new machine he'd bought just hours before crashed on the outskirts of Ashburton on Tuesday night. Michael Boughton (pictured), 56 and from Paignton, was pronounced dead at the scene after falling from his powerful Honda Goldwing bike on the Whistley Hill slip-road off the A38 just before 8pm. It emerged yesterday that Michael, who had recently been living in Totnes, had bought the bike in Paignton earlier in the day.
His car was later found outside the Isaac Merritt pub in Torquay Road with a parking ticket affixed. Paramedics could do nothing for him at the scene from where the emer g ency servi c e s received at least four 999 calls from members of the public. One former colleague, Bay licensing officer Neil Stanlake, said: "Michael was a first-class chap and a great copper--a real gentleman. There is not much more you can say because he was simply a really nice bloke." He added: "I only saw him just a few months ago -- and he was OK. Everyone who knew him has been greatly saddened by the news of his death.See the full content of this document
