Most of us have had mystery telephone calls at one time or another. The phone rings, you answer and the line goes dead immediately. Irritating if you realise what is happening but sinister and terrifying if you are elderly and living on your own. Was that heavy breathing you could hear before the line went dead ?

It happened to us recently, not once but seven times within three days. No human voice at the other end of the line. Just silence. My irritation went up a notch after each one and I determined to find out what was going on.
