NATALIE MELMORE'S gold-medal winning display in the 2010 Commonwealth Games was the highlight of a year of sporting success from South Devon's sportsmen, women and clubs. Newton Abbot's Melmore (pictured on facing page) struck gold after a stunning defeat of world class rival Val Smith of New Zealand 7-6, 11-2 in India in October.

It was Bowls England's first singles gold in 24 years in either the men's or women's singles, and thrust Melmore into the media spotlight on her return to Britain.
