Summary


IN THE late 1950s I enjoyed a real Irish Saint Patrick's Day.

It was the last year of my teenage and on that occasion I came through Dublin noting the carved mermaids in many of the churches. According to legend the creatures were caricatures of lust and debauchery. Apparently the Saint had weeded out the naughty pagan women and turned them into sea creatures before banishing them from the Emerald Isle. Spoil sport!
