IT was the night that Paignton town centre went up in flames.

In the early hours of July 4 1952 a small fire in a first floor office in Hyde Road spread rapidly destroying a dozen shops and numerous offices in the prominent landmark building known as Waycotts Corner, which also adjoined Victoria Street.
