I see it's been 'have a go at Torbay Council week' (again!) in the Herald. The latest furore concerns the pay of some of our senior officers and commissioners, although in fairness the report correctly explained the increase in top earners largely came about due to the increase in the number of people in schools, headteachers presumably, who now earn more than pounds50,000.

As somebody who once stood in front of a blackboard and briefly (and not terribly successfully) attempted to teach English in some rather 'challenging' secondary schools, all I can say is these folk deserve every penny they get.

In any case, and I have made this point before, if we did not pay the going rate for the job then we would not be able to recruit or retain the talented people we need to improve services and lead regeneration in Torbay.
