AT ABOUT 6pm on Monday, March 1 a torrent of mud and huge boulders hurtled down the slopes of Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano in the Bududa district of eastern Uganda.

The mudslides wiped out an entire village including a health centre and a church where people had gathered to pray.

Children sheltering in a village shop from the heavy rain were all killed when a river of thick mud buried the building.

Reporter LAURA DALE recalls her experience of taking aid into the disaster-hit region in her role as a response team member for emergency aid relief charity ShelterBox.
