Boy Racers in Brixham May [...] [Edition 3]

Summary

BOY RACERS in Brixham may face prosecution if they continue their dangerous antics and anti-social behaviour in the town centre, police have warned. Sgt Dave Casley has pledged to crack down on youths whose loud partying and erratic driving is upsetting residents in Middle Street. One neighbour described the situation as being like trying to sleep at motor racing circuit Targeting offenders will be police priority Brands Hatch and warned that someone could be killed. Following numerous complaints, Sgt Casley is stepping up police patrols in the area and said the law will be enforced if necessary. "It is a problem and we will be addressing it in a number of ways, using different methods at our disposal," he said. "It will become a priority for us, and the groups responsible will be targeted." A 31-year-old single mother, who does notwant to be named for fear of recriminations, has complained to the police about the disturbances 21 times this year and says she is frustrated at the lack of response. Other neighbours, including a 52- year-old woman who also wishes to remain anonymous plus local photographer Tom Horsley, have also contacted the police on numerous occasions but say the problem continues. Mr Horsley, who has a photography studio in Middle Street., described the area around the car park and bus station as a 'ghetto'.

"They come down and rev their engines and drive around the town centre like it's a race track," he said. "They play loud music on their car stereos, kids are drinking down there, shouting and swearing, playing football or skateboarding and sometimes fighting. "In the past year, I've probably called the police about 20 times. "I live above the shop and the noise wakes me up constantly. It's very tiring. "I like to get up early to take photographs but if you've only had two hours sleep it's hard to do that. "I don't bother to open on Saturday afternoons now because there are always huge groups of kids outside on skateboards and no one else is around. "Although they may not be doing any harm in practice, if you get off the bus and it's your first time in Brixham it's not pleasant and you don't want to confront them, so you walk the other way." Mr Horsley's two neighbours agree the anti-social behaviour is a 'nightmare'. One said: "At night the cars speed around the roads at about 70mph, driving like lunatics.
