While passing through Abergavenny, on our 1950s journey north from Bristol to Chester, we will not have failed to notice a slight change in the character of this line, with the presence at Abergavenny of locomotives from the London Midland and Scottish Railway and more particularly those that originated on the London and North Western Railway).

Although ex-LMSR motive power did work some trains as far south as Pontypool Road, it was only north from Abergavenny to Shrewsbury that the line had been jointly owned by the GWR and LNWR.
